Thank you to everyone who has supported me during the nine month long job hunt. I applied to jobs all over the country, and in the end, I'll be returning to Indiana University Bloomington on the administrative side!
I will be a Marketing & Communications Specialist in the Undergraduate Education department, doing client-based work for other departments and supporting student success initiatives. I will also help start a student internship program in the coming months.
The final job tally is:
Jobs Applied For: 185
Jobs Interviewed For: 18
Final Interviews: 6
Offers: 2
This is not the role I imagined I would land in when I decided to leave the academic job track, but it has many of the things I originally wanted: I'll be working with students. I'll have extensive PTO which will allow me to write novels and other public-facing philosophy projects that have been on hold. I'll be in a university setting with access to learning opportunities.
I'm afraid I don't have some neat narrative, grindset principle, deep job market truth, or one simple trick to pass along. The job market has simply been incredibly tough this year, and I'm glad to finally have landed a position I'll be happy in. I did what I had energy for at any given moment, regularly despaired for limited amounts of time, kept pushing forward to the next task, and slowly improved my chances by updating my portfolio and materials.
A great thank you to all my friends for supporting me through the ups and downs of the job hunt!
That's all for now folks—I've got to move.
More soon!
